Mosaic portrait of Medusa

Medusa was one of the Gorgons (monsters) with snakes instead of hair on her head. Who looked at her directly was turned into stone. Perseus used his well polished bronze shield as a mirror and beheaded her. After he had used the head for protection a while he gave it to Athena, who placed it on her shield (one of her almost ever attributes is the Medusa-head).
